Well prepared

Joe expressed how we were all feeling in the middle of our final practice music exam:

I just spelt “cello” with an H.

Do we still call a bus a ‘bus?

No, Sheepie, I know, but ‘cello is reasonably common with an apostrophe. This discussion came about in physics the other day actually, when we noticed Mrs Hall had written ‘phone on a sheet we’d been given.

There was a time when I frequently visited the Chello ISP homepage…

Yes Jonny, and guess what? There was a transition period where some people called it a ‘phone and others a phone. We’re in the same thing with the cello, I’d guess. I never spell it with an apostrophe and I’m a music student…

I’ve only seen it with an apostrophe in ‘So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish’.

To be honest I think the fact that you’re a music student is neither here nor there. I play the instrument! I really don’t care whether you use the apostrophe or not. I do sometimes, and sometimes I don’t. I wasn’t being completely serious above.

Yes, but as a cellist (or should I say violon-cellist?) you don’t write essays about your instrument. But this is irrelevant anyway.

And please leave your name so other people can see who you are! If you’ve got to choose (in your oh-so-busy life) between the time it takes to write out your name versus your email address, write your name!
