Bad news
I didn’t get the grades needed to get into my university of choice.
Good news
They let me in anyway.

Surely the good news makes the bad irrelevant?

Well, I didn’t get an A in the subject I’m studying, which is still bad news in a way. They asked for an A in music for a reason… plus it makes a more interesting entry that way.

I haven’t decided on whether I’ll mention it here yet, so I’ve emailed you.

Well, they wanted me to get an A and two Bs, and that’s what I got – however they specified that the A must be in music (seeing as it’s a music degree). I got the A in Chemistry instead, but apparently they thought that was good enough. I did pass grade eight piano with merit, as well as having a lot of musical stuff on my personal statement – both probably helped.
