The fourth miscellany

First off, I’d like to announce that I have fixed the bug which prevents Safari users from seeing this design. I say I’ve fixed the bug, when in reality I think it’s a Safari bug to do with CSS comments.

It came down to a comment in the h1 definition, which prevented any of the CSS rules after it from applying. All I had to do was change the comment:

// This comment here is what it used to look like
/* This comment here is what it now looks like */

I’d like to thank Jonathan (known as Mr E in the comments) for letting me use his new Powerbook to fix this problem – otherwise it probably wouldn’t have been fixed for another year or so.

I also bring news that my pineapple cutting advice has already been useful, as searches for “cut a pineapple” and “how to cut a pineapple” have both turned up that entry. As for those searching for “single women in shepton mallet”, I apologise for having been no help (merely commenting that, during the summer, there are many).

What else can I add to this fourth miscellany? Only that, last time I went to Wikipedia’s page on the Pope, it was different.

Haha, you’re using that Dock thing that all Windows users seem to be using now… Wannabe Macsters… If I want a dock, I use a Mac. If I want a Start Menu, I use a Windows machine. I don’t mix the two, that’s a recipe for disaster.

(Well, not really, but it sounded funny.)

Hooray! Now you just have to fix the typekey bug (you need to register your site with them) and then you’re the best site in the world ever (possibly)

Typekey works for me, and I have registered my site with them… how odd. What doesn’t work for you?

Rory: I was using that when you last visited.

You were? I need to learn to pay more attention…

It’s not yet the best site in the world. The site looks the same in Safari, for me. Mr J’s new PowerBook would have Tiger on it, yes? Well, I’m still using Panther, and I’m using the latest version of Safari available for it: 1.3.1 (v312.3).

On each of your comment pages (like this one, but not the main pages) at the top of each page is displayed the error: This page contains the following errors:

error on line 43 at column 176: Entity ‘laquo’ not defined Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.

Get to fixin’!

Oh well, at least it works for me. :)

That’s another Safari bug I think, but I’ll go find the hexadecimal entity and use that instead. As to the design showing up, could you send me a screenshot of the main page so I can see what CSS definitions render and what don’t?

Try emptying your cache, or at least refreshing the entire website from the cache. What that screenshot shows me is that some of the CSS rules are being applied, but not others (otherwise “Audience of One” and all the permalink related stuff would be blue with an underline). What that means is either there’s another Safari bug that’s blocking all CSS definitions after another point in the file, or that you’re still using the old one.

Actually, you could try just going to audienceofone.org.uk/style.css and refreshing it – search for “text-indent” and see what type of comment is there.

Aha. Clearing the cache seemed to do it.

Good. Thought it might :)
