Reading list

I’ve just added a reading list to the site: a list of novels and Christian books that I plan to read at some stage. Please let me know any suggestions for what to read first, or any additions to the list, or what you were incredibly disappointed with and think I should avoid.

  1. In my opinion, both The Catcher in the Rye and On The Road are rubbish. Well, no, On The Road is rubbish, The Catcher in the Rye is dull. I wonder if there is something about being the zeitgeist capturing great american novel that means it’s essentially mundane when the zeitgeist is over.

Also, while Girlfriend in a Coma is brilliant, I think Hey Nostradamus! is the slightly superior book. But Girlfriend in a Come is still pretty good.

  2. Okay, I’ve not had a personal recommendation of Hey Nostradamus! before so I may give that a go too. My only Coupland experience is JPod, which is excellent if highly geeky in places.

  3. JPod is one of his weaker books I reckon. It might be because I read Microserfs first, and because he so frequently reuses characters. JPod (and All Families are Psychotic) feel like a cheap re-hash of other better Coupland books in some places. But yeah, Hey Nostradamus! is the bomb. Generation X is pretty good too even if it’s not as polished as his later stuff, and so many people have done the same thing again since then (that whole zeitgeist problem).
