Today, I wrote the phrase “sublimity not beauty”1 in an essay. Just as I’d finished typing, Supermassive Black Hole by Muse came on. I’m not quite sure what comment to make. From the sublime to the ridiculous, perhaps?

To sleep, perchance to dream

It often takes a few months for new people to filter through into dreams. I remember it wasn’t until a month or so into my Japan trip that I started dreaming about the people I was with there. Similarly, uni people don’t seem to feature much in my dreams – except once, where I managed to save a guy I know from falling into an infinite vortex, or something. (I don’t normally dream about infinite vortexes, or whatever the correct plural is. This also surprised me.)
On the subject of dreams, xkcd has something pertinent to say.
Fopp

I sat down to write a blog entry, but realised that the only reason I wanted to do so was to show off my indie-cred by posting what song I was currently listening to.
I tell you, the arrival of Fopp in Oxford is simultaneously the best and the worst thing that has happened to me since getting back from uni. The best, because their “suck it and see” policy means I can buy music and return it if I don’t like it, and so am now experimenting in various bands such as Modest Mouse, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Broken Social Scene and The Shins. The worst, because they’re all so darn good and my bank balance is not looking healthy.

- I have been accused of accusing a female friend of collecting pictures of naked “quaffing” monks
- I wrote the first part of a new song
- I got locked out of my room for the first time this year
- I discovered another Christian in the music department
- I discussed sperm donation with a group of girls
- I went to a pub where the cider is so strong, they legally have to serve it in half-pints
It’s almost a tradition now. One of the above isn’t true…
I promise I’ll stop now.

Unfortunate

At the CU houseparty, we did one of those “get to know each other” games where you have to come up with two truths and one lie about yourself, and the other person has to guess the lie. Mine were:
- I’ve hacked into a library computer system with the intent of editing book loans.
- I’ve broken into a residential home and a Church of England property within twenty-four hours of each other.
- I’ve stolen clothes from Oxfam.
The answer to be revealed soon! Which would you go for? (Those with inside knowledge, feel smug and don’t post the answer.)
Prevaricating

With my first piece of assessed coursework due in on Tuesday, I should probably be doing it. Anyway, Best Thing is occasionally amusing:
Some of my favourites (without getting too sentimental):
- A secret revolving door revealed by pulling a certain book from the bookcase
- Overhearing something complimentary about yourself
- Finding out that you can fly, and just never knew it
- The moment you realise they like you back
- The ability to instantly teleport anywhere in the world
- Winning an argument with one perfect phrase
- Succeeding on a test you did not prepare for
- Knowing the difference between “desert” and “dessert”
- Expecting a tired, boring cliché and being treated to an original, surprising thought
- using the word irony correctly, or meeting someone who does
- the same, but with twice the penguins
